In Ancient Egypt, the amphora was the symbol for the heart. It actually closely resembles the shape of a sheep heart, and many of the amphora used to store wines, oils, etc, were actually made in this image. The handles correspond with the connection of the veins and arteries to the organ.
The heart was weighed against the feather of truth in the hall of Ma'at during the judgement of the deceased. If unburdened from sin and corruption, it would balance with the feather, and the deceased would enjoy eternal life.
